Founded by David I in 1136, Melrose Abbey is the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland and is located on the Scottish borders. The exterior is decorated with a number of varied and fascinating medieval sculptures, ranging from angelic to grotesque. This stone sculpture crouches on one of the flying buttresses on the South facade of the Abbey, depicting perhaps a demon or death. For information on visiting Melrose Abbey, visit our website.
