The slots and the hole are designed to work with M4 screws. Some interesting features -- The cross section of the slot is square. It can be used directly with standard M4 screws eliminating the need for specialty nuts. (ref OpenBeam) Also the edge of the slot is chamfered to serve as a guide for wheels and balls which can be used to make a sliding mechanism.
