The Factor of Safety Wizard allows you to assess the safety of your design based on a failure criterion. After your run a static study, you can calculate the factor of safety of your model. To access the Factor of Safety Wizard, do one of the following: After you run a static study, right-click Results and select Define Factor of Safety Plot. Click the down arrow on Results (Simulation CommandManager) and select New Plot, Factor of Safety. When you select Automatic, the software selects the most appropriate failure criterion across all element types. The software applies the following conditions: The default Failure Criterion assigned in the Material dialog box for each material. If you have not assigned a default failure criterion in the Material dialog box, the software assigns the Mohr-Coulomb stress criterion. If you selected Max von Mises or Max shear (Tresca) criterion for a beam material, the software uses the yield strength as allowable stress. If you selected Max normal or Mohr-Coulomb criterion for a beam material, the software uses the tensile strength as the allowable stress. For composite shells, the Tsai-Hill failure criterion is applied when Automatic is selected. What does this mean?Displays the mathematical relation that described the selected failure criterion. Factors of Safety Interpretation A factor of safety less than 1.0 at a location indicates that the material at that location has failed. A factor of safety of 1.0 at a location indicates that the material at that location has just started to fail. A factor of safety larger than 1.0 at a location indicates that the material at that location is safe. The material at a location will start to fail if you apply new loads equal to the current loads multiplied by the resulting factor of safety, and assuming that the stresses/strains remain in the linear range.
