Produced under license by Fairchild Hiller in the U.S., it was an evolution of the Fokker F-27. The prototype experienced minor redesigns for improved balance and capacity. West Coast Airlines operated the first F-27 in September 1958, with many airlines utilizing these aircraft as frontline airliners. Retirement began in the 1980s, but some remain in service today. The F-27 led to the development of the Fairchild Hiller 227, and ultimately inspired the Fokker F-50 and F-60 variants.
