The Fairchild F-27 is a version of the Fokker F-27 twin-engine turbo-prop commercial passenger airliner. It was designed by Fokker in 1950 and saw its maiden flight in 1955. It was produced by the Fairchild Hiller companies in the US under license by the Fokker using the F-27 design. The F-27 prototype was slightly tail heavy and a redesign stretched the fuselage 3 feet adding more fuselage foreword of the center of gravity and adding another three seats capacity. A Fairchild F-27 was the first of the F-27s to enter operational service in September of 1958 with West Coast Airlines. These aircraft were flown by a wide variety of operators. These aircraft also served as front line airliners for small airlines and performed exceptionally well. The Fairchild F-27s were gradually retired beginning in the 1980s and some are still in service. The F-27 lead to the development of the Fairchild Hiller 227 a stretched version of this aircraft. The Fokker F-50 and F-60s were also further design developments of the F-27.
