For an aircooled 3 kW China spindle I designed a fan adapter for a standard 120mm fan. By replacing the high speed impeller, which is mounted on the motor shaft, with a slow speed fan, the noise of the spindle can be reduced and the cooling at lower speeds and during breaks can be improved. My model assumes that a 12mm thick mounting plate is screwed to the back of the spindle body, with which the spindle is then attached to the milling machine. Therefore the fan also protrudes 12mm beyond the mounting surface of the spindle. Any standard 120mm fan with 105mm hole spacing can be used. A pressure-optimized propeller shape is recommended because the ventilation channels of the spindle are relatively narrow. The fan is fixed with four M4 screws, which can be screwed up to 10mm into the fan adapter. To mount the adapter to the spindle body, the original M4 screws are used, which otherwise hold the original fan cover. I operate the fan with 12V continuous current, always when the main switch of the CNC milling machine is switched on.
