The smaller one directs flow closer to the workpiece.  They've improved the quality of my prints dramatically.You might leave the supports as flow directors.  I removed mine to reduce the backpressure.I needed the longer one after one of my two extruders failed.  I've got an E3D Chimera dual extruder that I'll replace the original with shortly.  Stay tuned for those parts.
