Female Pelvis

Female Pelvis

This is a model of a pelvis of a human female. It is comprised of left and right ossa coxae (the “hip bones”), the sacrum (the large triangle-shaped bone that makes up the back wall of the pelvis), and the coccyx (the “tailbone”, which is the smaller triangle-shaped bone at the bottom of the sacrum). Each ossa coxa (“hip bone”) is made up of 3 bones during growth - the ilium (large, blade-like portion at the hop of the hip bone), the ischium (the portion of the bottom-posterior aspect of the hip bone, the part you sit on), and the pubic bone (the front portion of the hip bone that joins at the front of the pelvis with the ossa coxa on the other side. In adults, these 3 bones are fused in the ossa coxa you see here - they fuse together in the region of the acetabulum (“hip joint”), the round cup-like structures on each side of the pelvis. The large ring-like structure at the centre of the pelvis is the birth canal in females.
