Joel Telling (also known as "3D Printing Nerd"), one of the best 3D printing reviewers on YouTube, has teamed up with Matterhackers and MyMiniFactory to give the first of his design contests. The idea for this contest is simple - a spool holder that will fit his new filament shelves. This spool holder is designed with special dimensions for 3D Printing Nerd's shelves. It looks like a camera with a lens attached to it when fully assembled, which makes it good looking even when not used.It consists of 2 parts, the "Half" will be printed twice, while the "Attaching Pin" will be printed 4 times. It is inspired from LEGO Technic Pins, so it can be attached and removed from the wooden shelf easily. The spool holder's axle was a major problem while designing, as every company produces spools in different dimensions. I thought of making a universal spool holder that could change its axis' radius, but that would lead to its breaking as that will make it much weaker (It is made out of plastic after all). So I made a holder with dimensions for the sponsor's filament spools, MatterHackers filament spools.I've designed it in SolidWorks 2016, renderings were made using PhotoView 360, while the last picture was made using a combination of PhotoView 360 & Adobe Photoshop CC 2015.If you have any improvement suggestions, scroll down to the comment section. The YouTube link below is to his contest video, just in case you wanted to take place too.
