Final year suspension project

Presented is my final year race car suspension project. Inspired by the FSAE Formula Student competition, this project was aimed to optimise vehicle suspension performance by performing design iterations on all custom-designed parts. Having run each of the different configurations through MATLAB and backed up by manual calculations, a fully optimised system was achieved along with the appropriate of-the-shelf shock absorber selected. Key project objectives:  Research the various types of suspension systems by giving a brief outline on suspension theory and implementing vector theory to determine the motion of swing arms and suspension components.  Troubleshoot any potential design issues on the existing car by carrying out inspections and speaking to members of the Formula Student team.  Re-design the suspension system and investigate the use of advanced materials without compromising structural integrity.  Determine the most elegant user-friendly interface between the car and race team members.  Determine the parameters that influence both static and dynamic motion in the chassis-suspension system by carrying out sprung and unsprung mass calculations. Using these results, further determine an appropriate shock absorber to purchase ‘off the shelf’.  Determine appropriate manufacturing methods for each of the individual custom components.  Construct a fully-fledged working SolidWorks model demonstrating all the position geometry, linkages and joining of the components.
