Flash Cold Shoe Foot for Speedlite and Yongnuo Flashes

A friend approached me a while back with a problem. He's a professional photographer and often uses several remote flashes to light different parts of an architectural scene. The Yongnuo and Speedlite flashes he uses each come with a foot that snaps on the flash to allow it to stand on its own. The problem is that the foot is only large enough to support the flash. Once you add light modifiers to the flash, it's often too top-heavy to stand on its own.

This is a larger foot (about double the size) to allow the flash to stand safely at any angle with light modifiers attached.

He calls it "BigFoot" which is a fitting name.

See the photos for a size comparison to the original Yongnuo foot.

Print Settings

Printer:

MakerFarm i3v

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2mm

Infill:

25%

Notes:

Support is required to print the overhangs of the cold shoe mount. I recommend PETG over ABS for this part because the strength of the cold shoe mount depends on strong layer adhesion. The part is designed with long, curved filament paths to try to carry the stress away from the mount point, but it's still a challenge for FFF (FDM) prints to handle the focused stresses on the mount point.rnrnI used eSun PETG filament, and it worked well:rnrneSun Black PETG Filament, 1.75mm (Amazon*): https://www.amazon.com/

Post-Printing =============
Be very gentle when removing support material from the cold shoe mount. It's easy to crack the lips of the mount and seriously weaken the shoe. Default support material generated by Simplify3D comes out with some persuasion.

How I Designed This

I designed this using Fusion 360.
