FLSUN Extruder Vibration Dampener/Noise Reducers

FLSUN Deltas are notorious for extruder noise. This mod is intended to work with the thick metal (stock) extruder mount, either in it's stock position or when relocated to the side like the SR delta. I would assume most, if not all FLSUN deltas use the same mount. Using grommets, I completely eliminated my extruder retraction noise. Most grommets are made for metal parts and since the part I printed was 4 mm thick, I had to improvise. The grommets I had came from a box of assorted sizes. You'll want one with a 4 mm inside hole (the bolt size for the stock mount), and an outside diameter of about 7 mm (the hole in the printed part). If you need a larger hole, you could simply drill out the mount to a slightly larger size. So how are we going to get these thin grommets to work with a 4 mm thick part? Carefully with a sharp knife, razor blade, or Exacto knife, cut off one side of the grommet along one inside edge, so the inner part is on the half we're going to use. So for 4 holes, you'd need to cut at least 8 grommets, since we're going to use the good half on both sides of a mounting hole. You'll also want a 4 mm washer for the bolt head. Since the effectiveness of our improvised vibration mount decreases the tighter you make the bolt, you'll want some Loctite or some other means of securing these bolts so you don't drop an extruder in the middle of a print. While printing, play with the tightness for maximum stability with minimum noise, then Loctite it in place.
Which mount do I need? For an extruder in the stock position, simply drill out the extruder holes in the top sheet metal to 7 mm, deburr, insert two (uncut) grommets, reassemble and test. If you don't mind dropping the extruder a bit lower, then try the duet mount. For best noise results, avoid the angled mounts until you've tried the duet mount first. For side mounted extruders, like Nathan's QQS Extruder Drop Bracket, you can use the duet mount, or if you rotated the mount like I did, you can use the quad for a 90° rotated extruder, or the star mount, if you want to rotate to something other than 90°, like 135°, or have the flexibility to experiment. For a stable mount, you'll want just the bottom connection (the connection next to the extruder) dampened, since you only want the extruder to flop around, not the whole mount. This mount is only quiet if only rubber touches either end. If you overtighten, and the screw contacts plastic, you'll get more noise.
Update 09/04/2021: Added 45° adapter.
Parts list: Hardware: long 4 mm bolts, washers (and possibly nuts). Grommets with 4 mm inside hole (see description) and Loctite.
Like my work? Post a make.
