Received a Fluval Edge 6.6 gallon tank. Noticed the top venting plate was quite rusty, so I decided to replace it. To remove the painted steel grate on top, I carefully cut a 1" tall T in the grate from the centre of one edge. Then used some pliers to begin pulling the grate out. The grate is installed with a lot of glue, so be careful. Once I had it started, the grate peels up fairly easily. After that, I decided I didn't like the lighting system in there, so I removed the lighting arm (4 screws) and replaced it with 90 5050 LEDs (warm white strip) that can be run in 40% or 100% mode. The switch on top of plate controls my lights. To do this, I had to remove the ridge inside the plate hole that the old plate sits into. Once removed, you can place one of the designs into the space. Fluval Edge Insert: Drop in replacement for the original grate. I can't remember how tall the lip was, so if someone wants to comment, I can modify it. This plate is 3mm thick. Fluval Edge Insert Lipped: Replacement if you choose to remove inside ridge that contained the glue. It is 3mm plate + 3.25mm of lip to make sure it sits flush. Fluval Edge Insert Lip Switch: Replacement for removed ridge AND wanting a switch. I used a switch I had laying around. The hole fits a switch measuring 0.5" x 1.0625". It has a lip on it for the switch to snap into.
