Flying Toy Concept - Rubber Band Powered Ornithopter

Flying Toy Concept - Rubber Band Powered Ornithopter

This is a rubber band powered Ornithopter concept optimised for 3D printing. An Orthinopter is an aircraft that uses its moving wings to create lift (as seen in Da Vinici's drawings). 3D printing allows the creation of very lightweight and strong forms. This rubber band powered Ornithopter has an organic form that creates a rigid structure to resist the tension of the rubber band whilst using minimal material. The frame also has the flexibility in strategic places to allow the wing structure and body to be formed as a single part. Once 3D printed, a paper or lightweight plastic membrane would be glued to the wing and tail structures and a rubber band installed. The assembly uses snap fits and requires a small amount of glue. If my competition entry was successful it would mean an Ultimaker could bring this concept to life. I could test and develop the design and others into working prototypes. I hope you like my design and thank you for viewing!
