Folding Out Pencil Case v1

Folding Out Pencil Case v1

Designed this folding out pencil case to store pencils neatly and for easy access while using it! The design uses hinges that snap in place with a little bit of force, but they still rotate pretty freely. A few other things to note about the design is the locking mechanism at the bottom of case which holds the folding out hinge down. There is also a pocket in the back of the case for holding erasers and pencil lead, or other similar sized things. You will need to print one of each part except for the linkage, which requires two. You can either just use linkage x2.stl or print them separately with linkage x1.stl. There are a few issues with the design at the moment and I will list them here: 1.The lid doesn't fully close without the help of gravity, when the stand is locked. To be clear, the case will still keep pens in, but the lid can crack open a bit even with the stand closed. 2.You cannot use the stand to close the case. Its a little annoying, but the lid has to be pushed down first, and then the stand. This is because when the stand is fully extended the linkage arm and lid linkage make a straight line. I'd like say that this was an intentional locking feature, but really, I would have preferred to design it to be easy to close with the stand alone (no pun intended). 3.This is a more general design issue, but the case is quite small. It only holds some pens, and 8 inch pencils won't fit at all. The linkage mechanism also takes up a bit of space, so it will never be as space efficient as a simple case that holds many pencils with a flexible material. For me personally, this wasn't an issue but it might be for you. I actually printed a bigger version of this print, and it worked, but it was a little big for my liking so this is the size I landed on. If you know how to use solidworks, feel free to edit the files to change dimensions (it shouldn't break if you change the height and width variables in the equations menu) On another note, if you decide to edit the solidworks files, please be aware that I am not the most experienced with CAD, and so the way I designed certain parts might not be the most ideal. I used one multi body part to easily CAD all the parts together and split up the parts into separate assemblies. Do not edit any parts other than Tip Case.SLDPRT and Tip Case.SLDASM, as the rest are derived parts that change when the main part (Tip Case.SLDPRT) changes. Let me know if you make any changes, I'd love to see people improve this design. Print Settings: I printed this with PLA at 0.16mm layer heights. If you already have a setting for a similar layer height between 0.15 and 0.23mm, those should work fine as well. I also used a little bit of glue on Stand.stl because the first layer is a little hard to print where the linkage meets the base. You will know if you need to do that as well.
