In 1839 French sculptor David D'Angers (or David Pierre-Jean, 1789-1853) carved this bust of Francois Arago (1786-1853); D'Angers was known for many of his marble sculptures which are now on display in the main sculpture hall of The Louvre in Paris. Dominique François Jean Arago, known simply as François Arago, was a French mathematician, physicist, astronomer, freemason, supporter of the carbonari and politician.
