Freeze fracture describes the technique of breaking a frozen specimen to reveal internal structures; revealing hidden internal structures of biological samples. Freeze etching is the sublimation of surface ice under vacuum to reveal details of the fractured face that were originally hidden. This model was created for a dentistry e-learning module on the eukaryotic cell. It displays the freeze fracture of a red blood cell, showing the double-sided membrane (and the proteins it contains). In the e-learning modules, it is used to question students on their knowledge, hence the empty annotations.
