my openSCAD fractal vise! no hardware store needed! just a 3dprinter, some small pliers, and some grease. based on teaching tech's design.

very large!!! need at least 200x200mm build plate on printer.

like what I'm doing? tip some crypto! details in my profile.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Creality

Printer:

CR-10S

Rafts:

Yes

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2mm

Infill:

5%

Filament:
sunlu/esun pla/pla+ silk grey,any solid color

Notes:

raft for bolts and other small parts.

supports for base_front and thread_mount 80 degrees.

all printed with 3 walls and 4 top and bottom layers.

grease top rails of base front and back, threads of t_rod, gears, shaft holes, and arc pieces where they slot together.

thread lib is modded.

Assembly

print the parts (tips etc.)...

all parts are in correct orientation.

raft for bolts and other small parts.

supports for base_front and thread_mount 80 degrees.

all printed with 3 walls and 4 top and bottom layers.

make sure the parts do not warp. reprint if needed.

remove all suports from parts that need them.

8x 0
8x b0
4x1
4x b1
2x 2
2x b2
2x jaw_block
1x thread_mount
10x block_bolts
2x t_rod
1x shaft
1x shaft_clip
1x handle
3x vise_gear
3x gear_pin
2x base_bracket
16x base_bolts
1x base_back
1x base front

the arcs...

every arc is split in half. use the bolts for that arc to assemble. every bolt for arcs is of different lengths.
organizing the parts is very helpful!!!
start with the jaw blocks and largest arcs (2.stl).
slide the half with threads on to jaw block. and bolt on the other half with b2.stl bolts
repeat for 1.stl and b1.stl but twice as many times and on to the 2.stl arc's smaller toungs.
as for 0.stl and b0.stl make sure the bolt heads are on the same side as the bolt heads of jaw block.
also remove the sacrificial bridges on those.

the base part 1...

using block bolts:
attach one jaw block to base front.
attach the other jaw block to thread mount.
take a gear pin and insert it into a gear such that it does not stick out.
align gear to center hole for shaft so that the large hole of gear faces the 2 large holes where the shaft and handle goes.
insert shaft. the clip slots should be close to flush with inner wall.
slip on the clip.

thread the t_rods on to the thread mount (which has the other jaw block) about half way. make sure they are equally threaded on (even to each other and rotated the same).

the base part 2...

temporarily put a gear on each t_rod. mark the tooth that's facing down with a permanent marker.

remove the gears and insert a gear pin in each.

put a gear next to the middle gear with mark facing you and fix in place using the end of the handle.

do the same for the other but be sure the marks line up the same way before fixing in place.

put the t_rods into the holes where the gears are.
then add the base back to the t_rods.

using base brackets and base bolts, bolt the 2 base pieces together from the outside.

finishing touches...

grease all the moving parts.

add handle and you are ready to grip some weird shapes!
