myminifactory

This is a funerary stele depicting a hoplite (soldier-citizen). Although stele is only partly preserved, it is a funerary monument of exquisite art with a rare representation of a warrior, portrayed with the weaponry of a hoplite, that is a helmet, a spear, a shield and a sword. The inscription mentions the name and the hometown of the hoplite, Kardia in Thrace. It may be possible that this may be a funerary stele of a Greek soldier who fought on Cyprus during the Persian wars. The inscription is dated to the 3rd century and is later than relief itself. The inscription says: Dionysio (s) Kardiano (s)
