Alternative approach to exercise 5.3: I cut a 24-sectioned cylinder freehand with a knife, then beveled the cut edge and extruded it. Next, I added a subsurface modifier and refined the shape by tightening up various edge loops as needed. This method also involved some minor pinching to achieve the desired result.
