Game Boy Micro replacement faceplate latches and latch releaser

Intro

I recently acquired a used Game Boy Micro. Like most Micros, the faceplate latches were broken and the previous owner used double sided tape to hold the faceplate in. Surprisingly I found that there existed no proper solution to this common problem besides replacing the entire plastic inner shell. So, I set out to make 3D printable, glueless replacement latches, with success, as otherwise this page would not exist.

V2: this is the V2 version of this design, as I wasn't happy with the springiness of the original latches. Print settings remain the same. I've stress tested these with 10 sets of 50 presses on each latch (500 total/latch) and they seem to be holding up just fine.

Settings

PETG filament

0.45 mm layer width

0.08 mm layer height for latches

0.2 mm layer height for latch releaser

100% infill for latches

20% infill for latch releaser

no supports

Printed on Ender 3

Slicer: PrusaSlicer

Orientation: flip the latches upside down on their flat side

note: the notched latch must be mirrored around the Z axis in the slicer.

Installation

See ‘gb-micro-latches-post-printing.pdf’ in the other files section.

Demonstration video

Demo of the latches

<oembed url="https://youtu.be/vvSlGa3UWPo"></oembed>

Demo of the latch releaser

<oembed url="https://youtu.be/J6WRiaX7GUs"></oembed>

License

I license these files under the CC BY-SA license for multiple reasons:

On the one hand, I don't aim to sell, nor will I sell this design in its current FDM state, as some cleanup is required and I don't think a commercial product should require this.

On the other hand, I would love it if someone adapts and improves the design such that no cleanup is necessary, maybe even sets up injection molding or resin printing or something and makes the latches available to non-3D print enthusiasts, such that most Game Boy Micros with broken latches can be fixed. I picked "Share Alike", as I would like those improved remixes of this design to remain available to the 3D-printing community. The Fusion360 file is available specifically for this reason.
