Gameboy Cartridge - Switch Game Case

After coming to the realization that you could probably fit 3-4 switch games inside of a Gameboy cartridge, I knew it had to happen! At least 6 iterations later, this is what I have deemed the final product of this little adventure.

I tried to make the cartridge as close to 1:1 real dimensions as possible, but I lost the “nintendo GAMEBOY tm” at the top due to resolution limitations. I also decided that 3 cartridges were enough as 4 make some annoying geometry. The first stl file is the recommended print, while the second stl contains both orientations of the top piece, and a bottom piece with no dividers if you want to remix it for other uses.

This is a remix of a Thingiverse file that wouldn't properly link so here it is: Remix Original

Updated 11/2/2022- Added individual files for top/bottom. I also fixed the other files so that the bottom layers should be flush with each other.

Printing: ~1.5hr per Cartridge

Recommended orientation provided in gb_ready2Print

Supports only needed for top piece (the one with the sticker)

No need for supports on the bottom piece (where the switch games go)

Play around with top piece orientation (sticker face up/down)

I find that sticker side up gives the nicest faces and supports are easily removed

0.15 mm resolution highly recommended

I always do 15% infill but it shouldn't matter for this

Assembly

<oembed url="https://youtu.be/jV9bYKMyLIk"></oembed>

Peel support off top piece (at 0.15mm usually comes off as one sheet)

Place top piece sticker-side down on table

Align bottom piece (upside down) with top piece

staggering helps, only need larger bumps to snap in

Place one side of bottom piece into inner groove of top

Firmly push down on the side to lock into groove

Slide bottom piece up and down to ensure smooth movement

if jumpy, look for loose support or defects and trim

Close by pushing bottom piece fully up until you hear a click

(will add a better video if people are still confused)

Opening

To open, simply place your thumb on the top (sticker face), two fingers on the bottom, and push apart. Do not apply pressure near the oval at the top- this is where the pieces lock closed.

When first assembled, the cartridge may get stuck closed- I recommend opening and closing it a few times by gently prying it open with a flat screwdriver in the top seam. If it is still too tight, try shaving a little off with a razor.

Stickers

I made a template in Photoshop to create your own GB stickers- which can be found at this google drive link. For the left-hand side of the sticker, it follows the naming convention AAA-BBBB-CCC where

A = console (HAC for Switch, DMG for Gameboy etc)

B = acronym for the game

C = country/release region

I thought this would be a fun way of making personalized game holders. If this isn't up your alley, you can also find scans of Red/Blue/Green/Yellow online and print/buy them.

If you make any, I'd love to see them! I'd also love to get recommendations on PLA colors that match the old game carts. I think that my red/green/yellow colors are on point… but the blue is very wrong (yet very cool :D).

Cheers,

Thomas
