This is a geared polyhedron. What do you think? Is it a lofted cube octahedron? Or is it a simplified hexakis-octahedron? Who knows... To Make Basic Geared Polyhedron: Print 1 core - PolyCoreOBJ_STL.stl Print 18 pins - UsePinsOBJ_STL.stl Print 12 large gears - GearedPolyHedraGearsBig.stl Print 6 small gears - GearedPolyHedraGearsSmall.stl To Make Geared Polyhedron with Base and Turning Handles: Print 1 core - PolyCoreOBJ_STL.stl Print 18 pins - UsePinsOBJ_STL.stl Print 12 large gears - GearedPolyHedraGearsBig.stl Print 3 small gears - GearedPolyHedraGearsSmall.stl Print 2 handled gears - SmallGearWithTurner_STL.stl Print 1 base - SmallGearWithBase_STL.stl If you print the base, you will notice a 1.75" wide by .5" tall recess in the bottom front of the base. This is for a plaque or somesuch. How I Designed This I started by modeling the modified octahedron in LW. Using a gear ratio of 2:3, I divided the distance between vertices and calculated the angle between the bevel gears and radius of pitch circles. Decided on 16:24 teeth gears. Made bevel gears. Cut out the pin holes from gears and core. Rotated gears into position. Copied original modified octahedron and scaled it up. Then used scaled up model to cut all the gears.
