This is a replica of a Gel Electrophoresis comb used to create cells within the gel. Overview and Background Buying the combs used for gel electrophoresis quickly became too expensive, as the combs are usually sold for $12 each. I measured and modeled one that can be printed for less than $1 instead. Lesson Plan and Activity The comb is used in the same way as regular gel electrophoresis combs are, create an agar based gel solution, then insert the comb into the gel while it solidifies. After the cells are created, DNA can be inserted into them and gel electrophoresis can be run.
