Pershing Park, designed by M. Paul Friedberg, and its Pershing Memorial, designed by Wallace K. Harrison, were dedicated on May 14, 1981. Authorized by Congress in 1956, the Pershing Memorial represents the nation’s tribute to the commanding general of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I and the soldiers under his command. The memorial includes Robert White’s bronze sculpture of Pershing that shows the general in uniform, his hat in his left hand, his right hand beginning to raise his field glasses as he looks to the west. The statue, installed in 1983, stands on a rectangular base of polished Dakota mahogany granite etched with Pershing’s birth and death dates (1860-1948). The statue is visible from the street along a vista created by the steps into the park from the corner of 14th and Pennsylvania Avenue (south). It is also visible throughout the interior of the park. https://www.nps.gov/articles/pershing-park.htm
