Generic snap housing (e.g. for electronics)

General:

This print is a generic snap housing with a size of 70x55x27 mm. It does not require snap hooks or screws, it simply holds together by the friction of the overlapping parts on the side.

I have tested the mechanism on different printers (Prusa i3 MK3S, Pursa Mini, Ender3Pro) and with different materials (PLA and PETG). In all cases the results were good.

Re-sizing:

Of course the box can be re-sized in PrusaSlicer to your particular needs. The friction mechanism will simply scale together with the box. Let me know if you should try something crazy small or big and feel free to post a picture.

Use cases:

The box can either be used as-is, for example as a gift box for jewelry or other small gifts. That is what I had made the white box for.

Of course it can be used as a storage solution for small parts. It can be stacked as it is flat on bottom and top, but it does not have a dedicated stacking mechanism that would hold multiple boxes together.

My original application was as an electronics housing on a DIN rail within a cabinet. I had added the needed cutouts for the connectors in FreeCAD directly, but you can add yours simply in PrusaSlicer. See below for a short how-to.

Adding Cutouts in PrusaSlicer:

You don't even need a CAD software to add your needed cutouts in the box. Simply use the “Add negative volume” feature in Pursaslicer directly, to cut away what you don't need. It works very well and is ultra simple to use.

Thanks to…

Prusa for making such perfect printers and such a great eco-system around them. Also a big thanks for the free spool of chalky blue PETG Filament, that I got out of the pursaprinters.org reward system.

Happy printing everyone!
