Hi guys! Here is an example of my experiments with exporting models from 3DSMax to Solidworks. (Don´t think it is easy and this is just another guy´s model, it is not so! Continue reading). Well, as I said before in my Fikus house plant and pot project you can export models from 3DSMax to Solidworks using DWG file format (DXF - does not work in my experience, so DWG is only workable solution, but - only for small size and low poly models). It is almostly imposible to transfer high poly models with big file size. And even small size models (less then 1MB of file) take a lot of time to import to SW. Well after all you ll get only surface model of the object (wtih a lot of flat polygons and the whole model looks angular), and most of the time some surfaces will be broken and will not be displayed correctly. So in the case of this doggy I wanted to have a model of a dog for some architecture renderings or just use it like a figurine or a statue. When I imported this file to solidworks - SW somehow puts all the surfaces into an assembly, selecting by its own way where it will put differrent surfaces in different part files: I got a dog figure in one part and a teeth, eyes and collar in another parts. So later I had to insert all this parts to the main dog part and cook them together deleting unnecesary surfaces. After that I had to repair broken surfaces on the chest area, eyes and teeth were also remodeled (original model had some big and unnatural teeth so I remodeld it). Also the original model did not have a nose (cuz obviously it was using textures for the nose area, and I can not import texture map from 3DSMax to SW), so I made some nostrils and nose wings. And after all I had to make a solid from the surfaces (the main trouble here to check all the surfaces go continuosly and connected to each other - and some ot this small polygons are very annoying cuz there hundreds of them and you can see them only after scaling very deep into the model - this task wasted several hours of my life :)) Later I scale the model down to the size of the normal dog.... Yeah guys it takes a lot of time to complete, so my advice sometimes u have to think twice: do you really need the model from the 3DSMax and calculate the time you´ll probably spent - cuz sometimes it looks easier to build a model from scratch in SW then importing it from 3DSMax. Enjoy the model and leave some comments and u know where is the like button - so push it! :) I´ll apreciate this very much.
