Geta ruled alongside his father Septimius Severus and older brother Caracalla as Roman emperor from 209, when he was named Augustus like his brother, who had held the title since 198. When Severus died in 211, Geta's future looked bleak as his brother, eager to rule alone, plotted against him. The inevitable occurred in December of that year, with Caracalla orchestrating a brutal murder that ended Geta's life. The aftermath was just as ruthless, with anyone suspected of supporting Geta being hunted down and massacred across the Roman Empire, resulting in over 20,000 deaths. Despite these efforts to erase him from history, fragments of Geta's legacy remain, including a few remaining busts and portraits that tell his story.
