Just in case someone else has the same bike and the same problem ... The Giant Defy Advanced Bikes (up to and including 2018 model) 'Pro' variants have the all carbon steerer. This lacks a mounting boss for the front mud guard. Giant sell bike specific mudguards (search SPEEDSHIELD DEFY & CONTEND DISC FENDER). The rear guard fits fine but the front needed a custom bracket. You will need to drill out the angled bracket rivets from the stock guard. Designed for 2.5mm 200mm long cable (zip) ties. This thing was made with Tinkercad.
