Gilt-bronze Buddhist reliquary, Qingshansi

The coffin-shaped reliquary is 21 cm long, approx. 12 cm wide, and approx. 15 cm tall. The pedestal (called the “xumizuo,” or Sumeru dais) is 23.4 cm long, 17 cm wide, and 12 cm tall. The surface is embeded with white jade, red agate, beads, and other types of precious stones. Spirals of silver wires are added to the top of the coffin to represent chattras (royal parasols) of the Buddhist stupa. A pair of bodhisattvas are shown guarding the front doors of the coffin. The side panels of the coffin show the Buddha’s disciples in grief. Dated Tang dynasty (618-907). Excavated in 1985 from the crypt of the Qingshansi Pagoda in China. Xi’an Municipal Museum, Lintong District.
