Gloomhaven Custom Class: Bladeswarm

thingiverse

I've been working on a custom class for the boardgame, Gloomhaven. I'm calling the class the Bladeswarm, and it's a Harrower swarm that wears armor instead of the usual robe. The ability cards for the class are still in the early stages, but I'm happy with how the model's shaped up, so I'm posting it now for comments/critiques (and for anyone who wants a printing challenge ;) All of the arms and swords made this guy pretty tough to print. I did my best to make it more printable by hiding additional connection points on the swords where possible, but it still needs a lot of support material and a gentle hand when removing those supports. I've had success by generating support trees in Meshmixer after rotating the model back and onto its side, as seen in the attached screenshot. I then generated tree supports and went through and touched them up by hand, based on my gut feelings and on how it failed on previous prints. Be careful not to put too much support under the swords with the spiked round guards or the protruding blades, as those parts can easily snap off when removing support material. Then again, that's what super glue's for ;) I printed it with a 0.25 mm nozzle and 0.05 mm layer height. The photos are of this model after I primed it, but I didn't do any tricks with polyurethane or anything. 10/6/2019 Update: I've learned a lot since I originally made this model, so I figured that I'd take another stab at it (no pun intended ;)! The new model is extremely challenging to print (as you can see from the support structure that I had to build for it), so I'm going to leave the original one in here, too. I think that this model is pushing the limits of my FDM printer; I'd love to see a resin print, if anyone makes one! As always, the .blend file and pre-supported .obj (the one that I used to print it on my Prusa mk3 with a .25 mm nozzle) for this model are available to my patrons at https://patreon.com/VirtuallyJason. If you appreciate my work and have a few dollars to spare each month, please consider joining!
