Golden gear 2014 - Bevel Gear trophy

Model: The consideration behind my trophy design was to make something that signifies and symbolizes mechanical engineering and in just a mere look one must instantly come to know the intent for which the trophy is awarded. So, I choose a pair of bevel gears which is one of the fundamental components of mechanical engineering. I have uploaded both models with and without grabby. The grabby is included in the renderings as complete visualization of the trophy is easy. Renderings are created by applying material as plastic with different colors. The model is created using CATIA V5 R21. Material: Plastic was the best choice as it is light yet strong enough for a structural rigidity. Also , it is available in multiple colors as seen on sculpteo website . Secondly, cost of plastic is also less which can make the model affordable. Also, multiple colors are available in plastic 3D printing. Finish: Polished: polished through tribofinition, smoother to touch, layers still somewhat visible on rounded objects. I have avoided the option of double finishing as there is a quantity constraint involved while printing as written on sculpteo site as well as, double polishing would also increase cost. Black, yellow and red colored plastics are used primarily for the model. The grabby and be made separately and then pasted on to the trophy. All the letters are such that they exceed the minimum thickness as well as height required for printing. Dimensions and Cost: Dimensions of the model in close fit box are 189 mm * 187 mm * 176 mm The machine that can be used is POLI or EOS P395 as the dimensions are well within the maximum limits of the printer . Surface area: 1530 cm^2 Wall thickness is chosen to be 2mm so as to achieve a balance between minimum material usage and also providing enough strength to avoid buckling under minor loads. Cost = surface area * thickness * rate of printing per cubic cm including material = 1530 * 0.2 * 0.2 $ = 61.2 $ + 15 $ (miscellaneous charges for other items like setup and handling cost, etc) =76.2 $
