Golden Gear Award for GrabCAD Greatness

Introduction: Our Grabby is standing proud and balanced after spending time in the shop making this commemorative award for you. Grab it quick, or if you wait too long – bad things will happen. Wow, it looks like Grabby was busy and not only painted the trophy of gears gold, he made a flag out of a drill bit and nut. Take pride in your accomplishments and when you hold this award – know that Grabby ….made a complete mess in the shop and it took hours cleaning up. Why would you want one of these Awards? If you don't, I know I want one. It embodies everything about engineering - Gears, Bolts, Nuts, Socket Wrench, Drill Bits and a broken table. Well, that last one maybe not so much. Design Overview: Each of the elements in the design anchors the entire trophy and creates a rigid structure. Designing with 3D printed Sandstone, thin walls and unsupported wires cause issues in the post processing of the final product. Beyond that - shipping impacts any weak areas of the design, developing cracks or broken features. For example, Grabby’s waiter tray is attached slightly to his head for additional strength. The weight of the Gears would impact the Arm and break without it. The socket resting on a gear and wooden table – and the Drill Bit, anchor Grabby and provide enough support for the entire 3D printing process (hopefully). I toyed around with hollowing out Grabby and went against it due to the large exit hole(s) required for unwanted material to escape. Instead, know that Grabby is one solid Robot. When he was hollow…and cold, the cost wasn't impacted that much versus resizing the entire Award. The base of the award is hollow, since it doesn't require any exit holes and impacted the cost of the entire product. A Side Note… We scanned Grabby on a set of rusty gears that required a lot of time repairing. This was between fixings…. and Grabby instructed us NOT to worry if our CAD files disappear for a few minutes. We couldn't resist secretly placing a bumper sticker somewhere on Grabby that reads, GREAT CAD OR BUST! It was the best slogan our virtual interns could produce with limited time. Product Specifications My default selection for this Award is 3D Printed Color Sandstone provided from Shapeways.com. Standing approximately 5.45 Inches tall, the Award is also available in Sandstone,, Strong and Flexible Nylon White, Red, Blue, Pink, Purple and Red. If this product were purchased today, its estimated cost is between $73 for Full Color Sandstone and $93 for Single Color Nylon ($100 Maximum).
