Hello! My name is Andrew and I am a current sophomore studying mechanical engineering at Rowan University in the United States. Please read the technical report for all concerning details about the design. The weight reduction report has also been included in this report.Although my design may seem very basic at first, I implore you to read my technical report and the work that I have done for this competition. During my first year at college, I got heavily involved in the Engineers without Borders chapter at my school. In addition, some of my engineering coursework my first year involved learning design strategies to create products geared towards developing countries, which is what is exactly this competition is. Because of this, much of my analysis and design work has gone into developing a product that will not only work as intended, but actually succeed if implemented in Brazil. Designing the actual product in a CAD software is only a small part of the actual design flow. Competent product engineers need to think big picture as a perfectly designed physical product is meaningless if it cannot be successfully adopted by the desired customers, or in the case of this competition, it is meaningless if the product cannot help people, which is the real goal of designing products like this. All design and analysis work was done in SolidWorks 2017. Much of my report focuses on the use of manual topology optimization through the use of manual static analysis’s, and design study simulations, all of which was done in SolidWorks. The report is designed to outline some very basic procedures that any designer can follow to attempt to remove unnecessary weight from their product, using any simulation capable CAD software of their choosing. My goal of my submission was to try and outline what I have learned over the past year on how to be successful at making products designed for developing countries, in hope to better the lives of the people who live there. It should still be noted that I am leaving a lot of analysis and investigation out of the design flow. My product really only serves as a proof of concept, and any or all of my justifications need not be accepted as I am still only a naïve college student with much more to learn.Cheers!
