I took a rudimentary machining class at the nearby community college (NIACC) and this was one of the projects we did. I'm pretty sure that it is a common project for beginning machinist students. The faces can be made of anything you might want. We put the head and handle shaft into an oven and heated them until they turned a bluish/purple.
