Heavy-Duty Air-Tight Filament Spool Case

Having used a fair few spools of moisture sensitive materials over the years I am getting a little bored of constantly drying the same filament spool again and again. The Heavy-Duty Air-Tight Filament Spool Case is designed to enclose a single standard 200mm spool in an air-tight enclosure.

The standard design allows for 65mm wide spools with a 50mm centre. You can alter this by adding or removing layers and editing the spool base.f3d file. Remember to adjust the screw lengths if you do make changes. Designed for1.75mm filament. Adjust in Fusion 360 if you would like to use 2.85mm filament instead.

You will need access to a laser cutter. I have laid-up all the parts, excluding the two caps, to fit onto a single 900mm x 600mm sheet. The design uses5mm Cast Acrylic Sheet but you can use just about any thickness you like, just remember to recount the number of components you'll need. The Cork Seal is made from2mm Cork Sheet.

I highly recommend making the laser cut parts first and measuring the thickness of the 5 smallest parts. I have found that the tolerance for the acrylic is pretty bad. Edit the bowden.f3d file and create one to match the measured gap.

After you have assembled the case cover the inside with silicone sealant to keep out any moisture. You can add a spot of glue as you assemble the case to help keep things together. Make sure you use a glue that isn't quick-set and allows time for you to finish the assembly.

Print with your favourite thermoplastic | http://e3d-online.com/All-Filament

Refer toAssembly_Photos.zip for guidance when building the Spool Case. Dry assemble before gluing together.

I have exported Fusion 360 .F3D files for each component so you can edit sketches and modify things to your own design.

Hardware Required.

6 x M4 30mm Hex Stand-Offs.
4 x M4 20mm Hex Stand-Offs.
12 x M4 40mm Button Head Hex Screws.
14 x M4 12mm Button Head Hex Screws.
6 x M4 Square nuts.

1 x M8 75mm Bolt.
2 x M8 Washers.
1 x M8 Hex Half nut (Optional, used with thinner spools).

2 x 608ZZ Bearings.

1 x Threaded Bowden Coupling.
1 x Short Length of PTFE.
1 x O-Ring 10mm x 2mm (optional).

1 x 1/8 BSP Tap.

1 x Acrylic Glue.
1 x Silicone Sealant.

Alternatively there is the SpoolWorks Scaffold Soluble Support Spool Carrier which can be used with most other spools.

Love 3D printing?
