This helicopter was first used for military purposes in 1959 and went into production in 1962 under the designation UH-1 (Utility Helicopter-1) and the nickname Iroquois (after the Iroquois people), but is widely known as Huey, and the twin-engine model, Bell UH-1N Iroquois, as Twin Huey. It is one of the most successful helicopters in history, with more than 16 000 units produced in total.1 It is famous for its involvement in the Vietnam War, in which some 7000 units were used.2 The Huey was widely exported around the world and continues in service with many military forces, including the United States Marine Corps.
