Prehistoric carved boulder in the Herningside area of Newby Moss, south of Ingleborough, North Yorkshire. One of several carved rocks discovered in 1999 during surveys carried out by Arthur and Anita Batty and Noel Crack. Easily the most elaborate of those recorded, a 2010 photogrammetric survey of this stone noted: ‘…up to 20 cups, 2 with single rings and a cup with an inner and offset outer ovoid ring with possible grooves radiating out to the outside ring. Connecting grooves may also be present on other cups.’ Since the 2010 recording, some of the cup marked fractured stone has been moved. Intriguingly, only rare (for this area) sandstone boulders appear to have been carved in this cluster. Have other limestone carvings weathered away, or was it deliberate rock choice?
