Heron's Fountain

Heron's Fountain was invented in the first century by the Greek inventor Heron. It uses the pressure of water falling from an upper basin to a lower chamber to siphon water from a middle reservoir into the original basin. The loop continues until the water supply in the middle reservoir is exhausted. Fill the middle reservoir with water through the opening in the center of the basin, cork the opening and start the fountain by pouring water into the basin. The fountain will run until there is no more water in the middle reservoir. To remove the water simply uncork and invert the fountain. The fountain is a good educational toy to teach inquisitive children about hydraulics - they can be challenged to build their own from old soda bottles and straws - or as a decorative piece.
