Howard Hughes Medical Institute's BioInteractive.org teamed up with Makerbot to create 3D models of the kinase BCR-ABL and the ligands ATP, Gleevec, and Dasatinib to illustrate key concepts presented in the 2013 Holiday Lectures on Science, Medicine in the Genomic Era. The Holiday Lectures on Science series brings current research into the science classroom, helping to bridge the gap between textbook curriculum and exciting new research developments. Follow the links below to view animations of these molecular structures in action. ![Alt text](http://www.hhmi.org/sites/default/files/styles/biointeractive_summary/public/Biointeractive/Images/Gleevec-Inhibits-Cancer-Causing-Kinase-BCR-ABL.jpg?itok=GdYE7o1Z )Gleevec Inhibits Cancer-Causing Kinase BCR-ABL: How the drug Gleevec inactivates BCR-ABL, a mutant kinase that causes chronic myeloid leukemia. Gleevec-Resistant Form of Kinase BCR-ABL: Other mutations in the BCR-ABL gene can cause resistance to Gleevec, but another drug, Dasatinib, can be used to inactivate BCR-ABL. The models were created with molecular data form the Protein Data Bank (pdb.org) and were optimized with Maxon's Cinema 4D. Print your own models and use them in conjunction with the animations for a truly interactive experience in your classroom! You can learn more and view the full lecture series by navigating to the Holiday Lectures page. Instructions The models were created with molecular data form the Protein Data Bank (pdb.org) and were optimized with Maxon's Cinema 4D. Print your own models and use them in conjunction with the animations and PDF for a truly interactive experience in your classroom! Printed with support at standard resolution and 10% infill on a MakerBot Replicator 2. For best demonstration of the ligand fit, add magnets to the cross-sectioned proteins by super gluing them into the notches. If printing the full protein models, it is advised to scale down the ligands to about 80%.
