Hinged Chest with Working Lock, Dual Extrusion

cults3d

This is a variation on my Hinged Chest with Working Lock and Wood Texture, which is based on athey's Small Hinged Treasure Chest. This is a two-part model intended for dual extrusion or multi-material printing. It was inspired by dbgeorge's remix which allow*ed* to print the two materials separately and then glue them together. I had to say allowed, because this remix has vanished. I'm pretty sure it was randomly deleted by Thingiverse, or maybe the thing page became inaccessible due to this website's long history of database errors. What do we learn from this? Stop using Thingiverse, it is not worth your time. You need a dual or multi-material capable 3D printer for this. If you do, this multi-material model will save you the trouble of manually assembling the parts (although most likely the print itself will take much longer). If you only have a regular single-material printer, you might still be able to print the separate parts but you will have to cut them up and most likely sand them to be able to put them together with glue. It is probably a better option to print the single-material model and paint it instead. Again, dbgeorge spent quite a bit of effort on making an easy-to-assemble multi-part model, but apparently whoever manages Thingiverse thought it wasn't worth their precious server storage space, and this model is now gone. For other instructions like how to assemble the lock mechanism and how to operate the key, I refer to the original single-material model. As you can see, this remix does not have the 200% size models with thinner walls. The reason is that making the separated multi-material version of the regular size chest was a ton of work already and I really didn't feel like doing most of it all over again for the larger model. Perhaps a few donations could change my mind though… ;)
