Hippopotamus figures served as grave goods in the Middle Kingdom and were considered to be a symbol for regeneration in the afterlife. The drawings on the figure depict the habitat of the animal, blooming lotus flowers and lotus buds, a flying bird with wings outstretched, placing the hippopotamus in the middle of a marshy papyrus thicket. Nilpferdfiguren dienten im Mittleren Reich als Grabbeigabe, da das Nilpferd als Symbol für die Regeneration im Jenseits galt. Die Zeichnungen auf der Figur bilden den Lebensraum des Tieres ab, aufgeblühte Lotosblumen und Lotosknospen, ein auffliegender Vogel mit ausgebreiteten Flügeln. Das Nilpferd befindet sich gleichsam mitten im sumpfigen Papyrusdickicht.
