‘Church of St Martin Canterbury is reputed to be the oldest Parich Church in England. On the same site was a church used by Roman Christians. This is supposed to be the church outside the city walls where, before the Conversion, Queen Bertha worshipped with her chaplin Bishop Liudhard. The Saxon font is traditionally associated with the baptism of King Ethelbert.’ Historic England List Entry 1242166. The font modelled here from St Martin’s Church is unlikly to be the Saxon Font referred to in the list description. It is more likley to be Norman in date, circa C11, and originally may not have been formed as a font, but the stones reused from another site, possible from the top of a well.
