Historic Gravesite, Cape Canaveral, Florida

Gravesite of 14-month-old Joe E. Jeffords, located at the Cape Road Cemetery (8BR233) on the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. This grave has a unique design, made of concrete and in an above-ground coping style that defines the edge boundary of the grave. The name and dates are hand incised. The Jeffords are one of three pioneering families buried at the Cape Road location, settling in the area as part of families that were fishermen and lighthouse keepers for the historic coastal communities that are now part of the Cape Canaveral Space Force base. Our USF Libraries DHHC team conducted 3D and geophysical survey at eight historic cemeteries and burial locations, as part of a grant conducting research into these early 19th and 20th century settlements that pre-date space activities and Cold War era use of the Cape.
