The idea of homunculi is considered to be nothing more than a farce or distant fantasy, since no individual or group of alchemists has even come close to successfully creating such a being in recorded history. Even so, alchemists were banned by the government of Amestris to prevent an attempt at transmutation of a living being or any research on it. However, outside the official record, not just one, but several of these creatures were mysteriously created in the Fullmetal Alchemist series.
