Commercially available soil samplers have multiple steps or rungs, which I found less useful than I thought. Used by pushing into the soil of a pot or garden until the desired depth is reached. Rotate the sampler and remove. Wet soil sticks to the sampler, while dry soil is crumbly and easily falls out of the sampler.
