I loved the original hummingbird automaton by gzumwalt but since his design was 100% 3d printed components, I had trouble getting it to function since there was so much friction. My print quality was great, but no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to work without things binding too much. I decided to remodel some of the components to utilize ball bearings and metal socket cap screws and brass threaded inserts. This allows for much smoother motion and I was able to get it to function. The base is the same as gzumwalt's original design except for the two arms that connect the hummingbird to the transmission. Required hardware is listed below and is all sourced from mcmaster.com. There are cheaper sources if you search for the sizes. Amazon has the bearings significantly cheaper. 5972K211 x2 7804K128 x5 91239A224 x2 94510A030 x11 91290A113 x11 91166A210 x22 91290A125 x2 The bearings press fit into the prints. The brass inserts need to be heat set with a soldering iron.
