I was experimenting with modifying existing STLs, and this was the result. I'd used the original case on my phone for a while, but wanted to see if I could emboss a logo into it, and use multi-color printing to get something even cooler.

The model is funkgerm's case with the embossed Hyperion logo from Borderlands.

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Prusa

Printer:

Prusa Mk2

Resolution:

.15mm

Infill:

20%

Notes:

To print it similarly, you need to slice it in Slic3r with 20% honeycomb infill, zero bottom layers and two top layers. I printed with three perimeters. To get the color effects, after slicing I used Prusa's Color Print web service to add color changes at 1.1mm (the first solid layer), and again at 8.15mm, where I switched from yellow filament, to black filament, and back again.

I tried to do a similar slicing in Cura and couldn't get it to work. That may be a difference between how the two handle zero-depth top and bottom layers, or it could be I was doing something wrong. But its easy to do in Slic3r.

I've printed this case a couple times, with and without supports. They're kind of a pain to cleanly remove, so if you think your printer can bridge the volume controls, its best without. I got a little sagging with my Prusa MK2, but it did work.

How I Designed This

I took the existing STL from the original phone case and imported it into OpenSCAD. After converting an Adobe Illustrator version of the Hyperion logo to SVG with Inkscape, I exported it as DXF and imported that into OpenSCAD. At that point it was just a matter of scaling and positioning the logo, extruding it and then subtracting it from the case object. The depth of the embossing was adjusted to ensure the slicer would leave two layers above it, so I could do the color change.

Category: Mobile Phone
