NiCD battery performance is disappointing so I decided to design my own BP-173 compatible battery pack with two 18650s inside, providing 7-8 volts for Icom W32E (and other BP173/BP180 radios). 1. Print all parts, 0.2 mm layer, 3 walls, supports on. I used PLA, not tried PETG/ABS, no reason it should not work. 2. Make contacts using thin metal sheet or tinned copper tape. 3. Install the battery (I used pre-made, 2x18650 2S heat shrink wrapped pack with built-in BMS). 4. Solder the contacts. Make sure there's no way + and - can touch! (tape + hot glue) 5. Glue everything together using CA glue. 6. Charge using provided clip. 7. Enjoy running your vintage Icom HT longer than it ever used to do. Li-ions can be dangerous when not handled properly. Stay safe!
