The Ikea Octopus is great for hanging laundry on apart form the fact that the clips often break! This is due to having a thin piece of plastic holding it together. They will inevitably end up like the one pictured left.

Therefore, I set out to redesign it with my rather limited 3d design knowledge. I have ended up producing 2 versions, the one pictured in the middle, which is a clone of the original so it will still likely fail over time, and the one pictured on the right, which has a hinge, so it will hopefully never fail! I have printed all of these on my Prusa Mini+ using a 0.4 mm nozzle, and 0.25 mm layer height for the clone and 0.2mm layer height for the one with the hinge. Due to the version with the hinge being printed upright, it takes considerably longer to print compared to the clone.

This can be assembled by pulling the metal spring of the old broken Ikea peg. This requires a rather large amount of force, so you may need to use a pair of plyers. Then slotting the 2 ends of the peg into the holes on the new 3D printed peg.

I should mention that I have just checked and there are already some very similar designs. I have not particularly based it on any other design. Next time I'll remember to check before I design :-). The most popular one is the one designed by Filipe Santos which you can find here: https://www.printables.com/model/51992-ikea-clothes-peg-clothespin-replacement-octopus despite this, I have decided to upload this anyway as a remix.

Print Instructions:

Firstly, for the clone (the one in green): I highly recommend not using PLA due to it's tendency, not to yield and instead just snap, it will manage a few bends but will eventually split. I have printed it in Prusument neon green transparent PETG, It has worked well although may still break over time. I recommend printing this on it's large side, there are no supports of any kind needed! I used 0.2 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle.

Secondly, for the hinged version (the one in black). This can be printed with any filament, I decided to go with PLA over PETG as then there is less stringing. I have used Prusament PLA jet black, and it has turned out well. I recommend printing this upright with supports to keep the hinge intact. However, make sure that they don't go inside the hinge mechanism or the holes. Or, instead, use the included GCODE! I recommend using a skirt to stop the print falling over or becoming detached from the bed. You can choose either the 0.3 or 0.2 tolerance models depending on what your printer can withstand. They both follow the same process.
